Thoughts on Healthy Eating

Yesterday’s post about orthorexia nervosa got me thinking more about healthy eating, so I thought I would share some more about how we overhauled our diet. A few years ago, I rarely bought fresh produce because I would just forget about it and it would go bad. I lived alone, I worked two jobs, and I didn’t have the time or inclination to cook, so I gravitated towards foods that could be prepared in the microwave. I ate lots of frozen dinners and macaroni and cheese. Sometimes I even had cereal for dinner. A friend once remarked that whenever she came to visit, my fridge always contained salsa and pudding.

Healthy Eating: A New Disorder?

According to British news source The Guardian, being overly fixated on healthy eating is now considered a disorder. Orthorexia nervosa is defined as a “fixation on righteous eating.” The Guardian reports that people “suffering” from this condition may refuse to touch foods such as sugar, salt, caffeine, alcohol, wheat, gluten, yeast, soya, corn, and dairy foods, as well as any foods that have come into contact with herbicides, pesticides, and artificial ingredients.

Cauliflower Fettuccine Alfredo (as seen on Dr. Oz)

When I was in high school, back when I didn’t care about silly things like nutrition and would sometimes have nothing for lunch except a can of Pepsi and a pack of Rolos (shudder), one of my favorite meals was fettuccine alfredo. I loved anything made with cream and cheese and thought nothing of downing a big bowl of dairy and pasta. In later years, classic mac n’ cheese replaced fettuccine as my pasta of choice, and remained one of my regular go-to meals until just a couple of years ago (though I graduated from Kraft to Annie’s organic pasta).

Dietary Detox Day 2

Yesterday I started my dietary detox. I haven’t been super strict so far — yesterday I allowed myself one coconut cookie after dinner and today I accepted the Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup my stepson generously  gave me from his candy jar. But today I still had a near migraine-caliber headache that had me resigned to the couch all afternoon and evening. I’m not sure why — I don’t consume enough caffeine that I could be going through a withdrawal. My best guess is that it’s due to the Candida Detox supplement I started taking Friday night.

New Creative Projects

Not surprisingly, life hasn’t really slowed down very much so far this year. Though our home improvement efforts have been relegated to an occasional weekend project, I am busy as ever with new creative endeavors. A few weeks ago, I decided it was time to give kareneisenbraun.com an overhaul. I’m tired of the design and wanted something with more conventional navigation. I also wanted to shift the focus of the site more towards health and wellness, since that is currently the focus of my writing.

The Diet Detective

Ryan and I have recently discovered this great new show called I Want to Save Your Life. It’s on WE (Women’s Entertainment Network), but Ryan found it while browsing through health and fitness show titles on the cable guide. The show features nutrition expert Charles Stuart Platkin, who calls himself the Diet Detective. Platkin ambushes unsuspecting subjects who have been nominated by friends and family members for a diet makeover. The ambush usually occurs during a meal, so Platkin can catch them in the act of chowing down on fatty fried foods or calorie-laden quiche.
