More Material For My Growing Addiction

For some reason I decided to send Tim Kasser the link to my blog post in which I mentioned his book. Knox is a small community, after all, and I did take an Intro to Psychology class while I was there, though I never knew Tim personally. But I knew he wouldn’t find it odd for a Knox alum to e-mail him in reference to his book. Not only did he write me back, he sent me some additional reading material: his original article about voluntary simplicity (of which he wrote an abbreviated version for the recent issue of the Knox Magazine. It’s a great article; you can read it here) and an “overview chapter on happiness and policy implications.” Whatever that means. I shall have to investigate as soon as I finish reading his book. I’m sure the articles will give me a lot of material to write about. Which is exciting, because I seem to have become addicted to blogging. Between my two personal blogs and the trial assignment for AltGlobe, I’ve been writing blog posts or thinking of topics nearly nonstop. Last night after I got off work I was kind of disappointed that I didn’t have any articles to work on. I’ve already warned Ryan that once we’re in our new apartment, I’m going to be spending a lot of time on the computer. My writing has been on the back burner for so many years, it’s exciting to be getting back into it.

Simple Steps to Happiness

My happiness blog for AltGlobe is now up. You can read it here. No word yet on any further assignments. Actually, I was originally told that the trial period would consist of three blogs, so hopefully I’ll qualify to go on the next round. The post was getting rather lengthy, so I limited to finding happiness through authentic self expression. Some of the other elements of happiness I’m currently reading about in Tim Kasser’s book could easily make follow-up blogs, so if I don’t write about them for AltgGobe, I will probably write something to post here. Namaste.

Blogging for Dollars

My coworker Kelsey and I have been applying for some paid blogging jobs, so that we can earn some extra money (while doing something we love, yay!) Some of the job postings we’ve run across have been a little sketchy (I responded to one vague ad only to receive an e-mail about writing content for the adult entertainment industry. No, I did not respond) so I’m excited to have received a trial assignment blogging for altglobe.com. Altglobe is a social network dedicated to green living and spiritual matters. Topics covered include the environment, politics, fair trade, recycling, organic foods, yoga, meditation, and eco-friendly technological innovations. All my favorite things!

Baaaaaaaaah Humbug: Bucking Tradition

Last night, Ryan asked me what I want for Christmas, and I refused to tell him. I’m not being cruel; I know he’s creative and thoughtful enough that he’s not relying on my answer to help him decide what to get me (in fact, he said he’s already purchased “two of” my presents, and I’m sure they’re wonderful). I just don’t believe in making a list of things you want and expecting someone else to go buy them for you. The whole thing just seems too selfish.* I have issues with the whole practice of gift giving at Christmas as it is. Which is not to say that I don’t participate in it; I do. It’s also not to say that I don’t enjoy receiving gifts; I’m only human. And I like giving gifts, too. I try to find things that are unique and thoughtful and I truly enjoy giving my friends and family members presents that they will appreciate. But nowadays Christmas is such a commercial holiday, it’s often disheartening.

Clean, Green, and Solid

Today was only my second day using my new shampoo bar from Lush, and already I’m finding it hard to imagine ever going back to liquid shampoo. I was skeptical at first, but when the saleswoman said that one shampoo bar is equivalent to three 250ml bottles, I was intrigued. Not only does this make solid shampoo the more economical choice, there are myriad environmental ramifications.

My Crafty Christmas Project

The other day, I was making out a shopping list for a Target run, and one of the things I wrote down was “gift bags.” Gift bags. Little paper bags that will set me back about $1.79 each and probably end up in the landfill. Surely, I thought, there must be a more eco-friendly option for prettily presenting my Christmas gifts. I’ve read “green” holiday tips that suggest wrapping presents in pages from magazines or outdated calendars, but I’ve never seen anything that addresses making your own green gift bags. And I prefer bags to wrapping paper: they make wrapping a snap, they give diminutive gifts more heft, and they’re easier than paper to save and reuse.
